Will online video replace television?

I am really genuinely asking myself this question now and I think the answer is likely to be yes. I believe within 10 years most television will be delivered via a data network. Look at the recent breakthrough in bandwidth capability being released by Cisco this week. Couple that with the current cellular based networks, wimax, etc and you have a formula to change television as we know it.

Online video use continues to rise in U.S.

CNN, MSN and AOL seeing largest month-over-month gains, says Nielsen

Now a days, it feels like almost any major event aired on television will either be streamed online or clips will end up showing up all over YouTube.  That’s why if I miss an episode of say, my favorite show, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,”  I know it will end up somewhere on the Web for me to watch.

And that simple notion of thinking is starting to catch on.  In the month of February, year-over-year online video usage was up 10.5% in the U.S., according to reports released by Nielsen this morning.

YouTube continues to hold its strong grasp as the leading top brand ranked by video streams.  The site saw 5.9 billion streams last month.  Although this sounds like an incredible amount, in terms of month-over-month growth YouTube was -10.7% from January.

As in all things that are impacted by changing technology, it will enhance, not replace.

It is incumbent upon the managers of tv to take advantage of the changes, rather than fight the change.

Most DVRs record only two shows at a time and there are four major networks as well as a host of other worthwhile resources to collect from.

And of course, when you are watching the replay, you just run through most of the commercials.

The economics of TV is changing and that will be what will control where it all ends up. The trick is to find the niche that you are to fill and capitalize on it.

one of the reasons startups do so well (?) is because they can attempt things that major corporations cannot economically and prove a concept that is then sold to the corporation for long term execution.

and of course the majority of startups don’t really succeed, but the ones that do make the risk worth the effort.

Online movies plus larger screens of the computer may eventually replace the TV. .More and more young people are watching their movies to the computer screen. That is what I have heard from few people that I know.
